China on Monday urged the United States to stop irresponsible actions after the U.S. said that China is interfering with oil and gas development in the South China Sea.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks at a daily news briefing in Beijing.

The situation in the South China Sea is stable, the spokesperson said.

China and ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) have promoted talks on the Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea under the framework of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) in the South China Sea, Geng said.

He criticized the U.S. for trying to disturb the regional stability and utterly disregarding some basic facts.

Geng called on the United States to abandon meaningless actions and do more things conducive to peace and stability in the South China Sea.

"We hope that the U.S. can respect the efforts of China and ASEAN to resolve disputes through dialogue on the South China Sea issue," he added.
