An 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Sunday, killing one person and injured over 26 others as shockwave extended into neighboring Ecuador.
The male victim killed by falling debris in his house in the region of Cajamarca when the quake occurred at 2:41 a.m. local time has been identified as 48-year-old Danilo Munoz, according to local media.
A total of 11 people were also injured in Peru, and more than 50 houses were left uninhabitable, Peru's civil defense coordinator Ricardo Seijas said.
Several schools, churches, hospitals and clinics were also damaged, according to Peru's National Emergency Center (COEN).
Following the quake, state-owned oil company Petroperu said the quake created a "minor" leak in a pipe at its Talara refinery on the Pacific coast but it said the situation has since been controlled.
The 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit 191 kilometers east of Moyobamba, northern Peru with a depth of 115 kilometers, but its shockwave was felt over a wide area even in other countries like Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia.
The report said there are currently 15 people wounded in Ecuador.
