At least 20 students were killed and several injured in a massive fire that broke out Friday at a commercial building in Surat city in India's western Gujarat state, according to NDTV.
The fire broke out at around 3:30 p.m. local time. Fifty students were reportedly inside of the building when the incident happened.
The fire engulfed the top two floors of the multi-story commercial building, local media reported. Nineteen fire engines and two hydraulic platforms were dispatched to control the blaze.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Extremely anguished by the fire tragedy in Surat. My thoughts are with bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly. Have asked the Gujarat Government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected."
