China pursues no private interest in Pacific island countries

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday said China is not pursuing a "sphere of influence" with Pacific Island countries.

Wang made his remarks when meeting with Fijian Minister for Foreign Affairs Inia Seruiratu in Beijing.

Wang also told Seruiratu China is ready to enhance communication and cooperation with Fiji and other Pacific island countries to achieve common development and prosperity.

"China attaches great importance to relations with Fiji," said Wang, adding that his country stands ready to enhance the synergy of development strategies with Fiji to jointly facilitate Belt and Road cooperation in line with the principle of consultation and collaboration for shared benefits, and make joint efforts to safeguard free trade and multilateralism.

Seruiratu expressed Fiji's gratitude to China for its aid and said Fiji is willing to enhance cooperation with China to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to a higher level.
