Yuncheng Salt Lake is an ancient and typical inland saltwater lake. Geological studies show that the lake came into being during the Cenozoic Tertiary Himalayan tectonic movement, about 500 million years ago.
It is around 30 kilometers long from northeast to southwest and three to five kilometers wide. The lake, 324.5 meters above sea level and about six meters deep, has a total area of 132 square kilometers.
