Economic cooperation between China and Central Asia seems to be lagging behind that of China and East Asia, as well as Southeast Asia.

However, as economic pillars for SCO have been strengthened, it’s now releasing more opportunities for economic development in the region, and China and Central Asian countries could work together to rediscover economic potential, according to Cui Hongjian, director of European studies at the China Institute of International Studies.

“Recently we found out Central Asia countries got increases in GDP growth. And they face big challenges to get sustainable development by transforming economic structure and upgrading industry, manufacturing, etc.,” he told CGTN.

As Cui explained, Central Asia used to have single economic structure, focusing on mineral, energy and agriculture, and lack of investment from outside, while China has realized the importance of balancing development between eastern regions and western regions.

And the expert considered it important timing for Chinese investment to realize a new level in the region. He noted that the unique geographic position of Central Asian countries would bring huge economic potential in areas like logistics, infrastructure and manufacturing.

Cui stated that the Belt and Road Initiative as well as economic belt between China and Europe are “giving a new dynamic for China and Central Asia countries to find out more opportunities and rediscoveries economically.”
