After another disappointing season, AC Milan of Serie A were determined for a change and appointed the club's former legendary players Paolo Maldini and Zvonimir Boban technical director and chief football officer (CFO) respectively.

Before the new job, Maldini was AC Milan's sporting strategy and development director, but the club's chief executive Ivan Gazidis believes Maldini is the right man for technical director.

"I am confident Paolo will be able to project his experience, his vision and his leadership. Paolo is an integral part of AC Milan and knows the way to success. He will be an important point of reference for everyone," said Gazidis.

Maldini's former teammate, Boban was also excited about returning to work for AC Milan. "I am very happy to return to my beloved Milan, and I will give my contribution to bring it back where it deserves to be…When Paolo called me to check on my availability, I jumped into my car and went to his home in Milan in the middle of the night," said Boban.

Both Maldini and Boban contributed a lot to AC Milan's past glory. Maldini made 902 appearances for the Rossoneri and helped the club win seven Serie A championships and five UEFA Champions League titles. Boban played nine seasons for AC Milan during which he won four Serie A titles and one Champions League trophy for the club.

The 2018 to 2019 season was riddled with failure for the Rossoneri. They only ranked No.5 in Serie A, missing next season's Champions League and tens of millions of euros of bonus money after spending over 100 million euros (about 112 million U.S. dollars) for improvement. The club fired their manager Gennaro Gattuso and are still looking for replacements.

Meanwhile, AC Milan's former technical director Leonardo Araujo has already found a new job with Paris Saint-Germain as their sporting director, a position that he worked in between 2011 and 2013.

"This club has been so important to me in my football career and in my life. I had really emotional moments here both as a player in the late 90s and more recently as sporting director along with our chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi on my return to the club in 2011. Today, I come back to Paris full of energy to rejoin this club that I deeply respect," said Araujo.

"Leo has a place in our club's history, and we all know the role he played as sporting director at the start of our project. His return, with his enthusiasm and talent, will bring the club into a new ambitious cycle, and I am sure that this reunion will bring happiness to the Parc des Princes, which has always kept Leo in its heart," said Nasser Al-Khelaifi, chairman and CEO of PSG.
