More ballots are set to get underway in UK's Tory leadership election, EU leaders gather to discuss the succession of top jobs in the bloc, and Thailand gets ready for the 34th ASEAN Summit.

UK Tory leadership race — Round 2,3,4,5

There are six candidates left in the contest to replace Theresa May as prime minister, with Boris Johnson ahead, followed by Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, Dominic Raab, Sajid Javid and Rory Stewart.

The second ballot is expected to take place on June 18, and this time the candidates will require the backing of at least 10% of Conservative MPs. Following the results of round 2 voting, the remaining candidates will participate in a BBC TV debate.

More ballots will take place on June 19 and 20 until there are just two candidates remaining, and they will then campaign to get support from party members. The results of the final ballot is set to be announced in the week commencing July 22, and then May will visit the Queen and officially resign from her position.

EU top job horse-trading

Leaders of the European Union's member states will gather in Brussels on June 21-22 to try to narrow down appointments for the bloc's top jobs, which will change hands in November and December.

All 28 national leaders of member states are due to decide who will succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the EU executive arm, the European Commission. The choice will, in part, reflect the results of elections last month to the European Parliament

Bargaining over the top jobs, which also include a successor to European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, European Council President Donald Tusk and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, seeks to balance the interests of individual states and groups of countries as well as political parties.

The leaders will also adopt the EU's strategic agenda for 2019-24.

Thailand ready for 34th ASEAN Summit

Thailand is ready to host the 34th ASEAN Summit, themed “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”, scheduled for June 22-23.

Director General of the Thai Foreign Ministry’s Department of ASEAN Affairs Suriya Chindawongse said leaders of 10 ASEAN member states will gather in Bangkok for the regional event.

There will be a focus on building a people-centered ASEAN Community "that leaves no one behind and looks to the future", he said, adding that working towards a digital, green and seamlessly connected region will be at the center of talks, as well as the promotion of ASEAN centrality within the context of the regional architecture.
