Wang Yu was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer in late 2017. He decided to record his voice on a smart home assistant device so that his family could hear him even after he is gone. Between every chemotherapy session, Wang traveled from home to Beijing. He tried to record enough words and phrases to allow the smart device to do data analysis and simulate his voice. Wang’s wife wrote in her diary: “Son, please remember your father’s voice, as if he has never left.” Although Wang Yu succumbed to his illness in December 2018, his voice remains.
