China has always called for a political solution to the Syrian issue, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a joint briefing with Syrian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Walid Mualem on Tuesday.
Wang stressed China will firmly support Syria in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, adding China will work together with Syria to further promote the continued development of their bilateral ties.
Wang called to accelerate political settlement of Syrian issues and convene a constitutional committee as soon as possible. He urged all relevant parties to promote inclusive political dialogue.
China will help Syria fight terrorism, restore national stability, and carry out economic reconstruction, he said, adding that all parties involved should abandon geopolitical self-interest, strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism, help steady economic reconstruction of Syria, and support and help Syrian people return to normal life as soon as possible.
On the standoff between Iran and the U.S., Wang urged all sides to exercise restraint and ease tension in the Gulf region.
He said China hoped Iran would not abandon the 2015 nuclear deal, adding that China's determination to maintain the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is unwavering, and is willing to work with all parties to fully implement the deal.
Mualem, who is visiting China from Sunday to Friday, said Syria shares a common position with China on various political issues, and the two countries have good cooperation in the fields of politics, security and anti-terrorism. He expressed his deep appreciation for China's support for Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
He said Syria will form a constitutional committee as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Mualem stated Syria's firm stance against unilateral measures taken by the United States against the Syrian people, including economic means.
He said Syria stands with China and opposes "U.S. economic terrorism," which he said has influenced the foundation of international relations. He called on all members of the international community to resist the approach of the United States.
He also said he hopes to learn from China's experience and strengthen economic cooperation with China.
