These roughly circular, bowl-shaped or cylindrical potholes are found in the Shenyu River channel in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The area of about 30,000 square meters is dotted with potholes of various shapes and sizes.

The potholes were formed by fast river currents or meltwater currents while the surface was covered by glaciers.
As more geologists and admiring tourists visited the site, the river section was included in the scope of protection by the local government.
