Roger Federer began the new grass season in style as he won his first match at the Halle Open on Tuesday.

Ten-time champion Federer was up against Australia’s John Millman in the first round of the warm-up tournament for Wimbledon and made no mistake to kick-start his campaign with a 7-6, 6-3 victory. Incidentally, the last time the two players met, Millman had famously upset the Swiss legend in the fourth round of the 2018 U.S. Open. But the 37-year-old legend didn't let that happen again.

This was Federer's first match since he lost to his archrival Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the French Open. He began on a positive note as he won his first service game at love.

"It is always important to win your first game on grass, because otherwise the grass season can be very short," said Federer.

World number 57 Millman put up a strong fight to force a tiebreaker, but sent a backhand over the line to lose it 7-1.

Early in the second set, the 20-time Grand Slam champion went ahead of the Aussie for a 2-1 lead.

Federer continued to look good in his first match of the grass season as he came in for a volley winner.

Soon it was a match point for the Swiss Ace and he took the second set 6-3 to pocket the match. He will take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who has won the last two matches of their 17 career meetings.

Tsonga edged past Benoit Paire of France to register a 6-4, 7-5 win in his opening round match.
