Basketball fans in the US are focused on this evening's NBA Draft, where Duke University center Zion Williamson is expected to be taken first overall by the New Orleans Pelicans. This past season's NCAA Player of the Year is not shying away from the spotlight, saying he would love to see those predictions come true.
"It'd be a huge honor. Knowing that a team would like to take me number one, I mean, you can't dream anything better than that. Every kid dreams about being the number one pick. You know, if I have the honor of being selected one, I mean, it would be a huge honor, and something I really can't put into words. It's just... I think my expression and body language will tell it all tomorrow night... if I get drafted one," Zion Williamson said.
The 18-year-old Williamson declared for the NBA Draft after spending just one season playing at Duke University under Mike Krzyzewski, the former coach of the US national team. The 2.01 meter, 129-kilogram center averaged 22.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, leading the Blue Devils to the Atlantic Coast Conference title and the quarter-finals of the NCAA Tournament.
He missed time with a knee injury after one of his shoes fell apart during a game in February, but is confident that a selection by New Orleans would provide him with a great environment to flourish.
"It was like ... even though we all understood this is a business, it was just like, if they were to draft me, coming to New Orleans, they would try to make it not only about business ... it would be like about joining a family. So that's one thing I took away from that meeting," Zion Williamson added.
