The Utah Jazz acquired point guard Mike Conley from the Memphis Grizzlies by sending Jae Crowder, Kyle Korver, Grayson Allen, the No.23 pick of the 2019 NBA Draft and a future first-round pick to Memphis, reported The Athletic's Shams Charania and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Though this trade cost Utah two of their shooters, which they don't have plenty of, Conley's joining will put the team on the candidate list for next season's Western Conference Finals.

The Jazz have made the playoffs in the past three seasons and reached the Western Semifinals twice. They have the league's top defense, which limited James Harden's scoring from regular season's 36.1 points on average to 27.8 points per game in the series. However, like usual, the Jazz were held back by their disappointing offense which could only drop an average of 97.8 points per game.

Part of Utah's problem came from their former point guard Ricky Rubio (and the other from the team's lack of 3-point shooters), who is a good orchestrator but is not threatening enough in offense, and thus cannot help Utah in the best way. As a result, Utah often had to rely on Donovan Mitchell to both orchestrate and score.

Compared with Rubio, Conley has the same good defense and orchestrating ability but way better individual offense. In the past 2018-19 season, he could get 21.1 points, 6.4 assists and 1.3 steals for Memphis. More importantly, Conley could bury 2.2 3-pointers per game at a 3-point rate of 36.4 percent – he is well-known for making big-heart shots.

As for the Grizzlies, Conley's departure declared the end of an era characterized by Conley, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. The team selected Jaren Jackson Jr. with the No.4 pick in last year's Draft and the one-year young man could drop 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks while keeping a 3-point rate of 35.9 percent. In the coming 2019 Draft on Thursday, the Grizzlies have the No.2 pick and will probably select Ja Morant before starting to build the franchise around these two youngsters. The team may keep Crowder for his flexibility of being able to play three positions but it's hard to imagine that they will keep the 38-year-old Korver.
