Crested ibis, an endangered species, were frequently found in China, Japan, South Korea and Russia in the early 20th century. Diminishing wetlands and the widely use of pesticides have destroyed crested ibises' natural habitats, causing the birds to nearly go extinct. Yet, thanks to a last group of seven such birds found in northwest China's Shaanxi Province 40 years ago, conservationists have been able to help the birds reproduce. Now there are almost 5,000 crested ibises around the world — all descendants from Shaanxi Province.
