The cicada eclosion was recorded in a community in east China's Jiangsu Province. The shedding lasts for over an hour on the night of the Summer Solstice.

The cicada family has more than 3,000 species around the globe.

Most male cicadas make sounds at night to avoid predators and attract females, who don't have the sound organ to sing.

Cicadas usually go through the eclosion in mid-summer. The process is described as "Slough off the cicada's golden shell" in the famous Chinese essay "The Thirty-Six Stratagems."
