Chinese involvement in Kenya can be seen everywhere, such as infrastructure, trade and investment, said James Wainaina Macharia, cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, in an interview on Monday.

In terms of transport and infrastructure, China's impact in Kenya can be seen in many projects, such as the rail infrastructure project, Macharia told CGTN.

China and Kenya have shared a promising trade volume in recent years, especially in agriculture. For example, Kenya's popular avocados have entered the Chinese market.

Macharia also reviewed the country's participation in the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, during which China and Kenya signed agreements on agricultural exports.

The Chinese government and institutions are actively engaging in the trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, Macharia said.

"China has the biggest market. The cooperation [between the two countries] is beneficial and complementary."

Bank of China and the Export-Import Bank of China brought investment to facilitate the country's exports, Macharia said.

Cooperation in the ICT field

The cabinet secretary said Kenya gives priority to the development of information and communications technology (ICT), with an ICT ministry being created to focus on this area.

The country welcomes global tech companies to engage in the ICT development blueprint. Chinese tech giant Huawei, for example, is an important player in the building of Konza smart city.

"[Huawei] They are able to develop solutions for us. Huawei's Intelligent Transport System is able to help the movement of people, traffic and mobility in the city of Nairobi," Macharia said.

As for the rising trade protectionism and unilateralism in the global trade climate, Macharia said cooperation between China and Kenya will not be affected, as China is firmly supporting a multilateral trading system, under which both countries enjoy shared prosperity.

"We believe cooperation with China is shared and mutual benefit," Macharia said.

The Coordinators' Meeting on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) is scheduled for June 24 and 25 in Beijing. Chinese and African officials gathered to review progress of the implementation of actions announced last September.
