AFC Champions League: Shanghai SIPG advance to quarter-final after penalty win

In the last match of 2019, AFC Champions League Round of 16 East Zone, Shanghai SIPG beat Jeonbuk Hyundai 5-3 in penalty phase to enter the quarter-finals at rainy Jeonju World Cup Stadium in the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Wednesday night.

Jeonbuk's Kim Shin-wook broke the stalemate at the 27th minute from the center of the box, while Hulk of SIPG scored an equalizer at the 80th minute.

The 2-2 draw on aggregate made the game come into the 30 minutes of extra time, but the mark was null, and it came to the penalty duel.

SIPG's goalkeeper Yan Junlin saved Jeonbuk's first penalty, and all the following shots were succeeded.

When SIPG's Oscar scored their fifth, all the effort of struggling in the heavy rain got paid off for the reigning Chinese Super League champion.

Besides, Urawa Red Diamonds defeated Ulsan Hyundai 3-0 and qualified with the 4-2 result on aggregate.

All of the four East Zone berths of AFC Champions League quarter-finals are born, they are two Chinese clubs and two Japanese clubs – Guangzhou Evergrande, Shanghai SIPG, Kashima Antlers, and Urawa Red Diamonds.

The West Zone's Round of 16 will begin on August 5, and the eight teams are: Al Nassr (KSA), Al Wahda FSCC (UAE), Al Ittihad (KSA), Zobahan FC (IRN), Al Duhail SC (QAT), Al Sadd SC (QAT), Al Ahli Saudi FC (KSA) and Al Hilal SFC (KSA).
