The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that it will revise the bidding process for future editions of the Summer and Winter Games to avoid "damages" caused by withdrawals of bidders, which has become a big problem in recent years. The changes have been included in the Olympic Charter and given unanimous approval of the IOC Session.
The first change is that the rule of voting on host cities seven years in advance has been dropped. This opens the door for more joint picks, like the recent double selection of Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028. Secondly, the IOC confirmed that future hosts will not be necessarily a city, which means that multiple municipalities, regions, and countries can collaborate to make a joint bid. This could lead to further efforts like 2026 Canada-U.S.-Mexico Football World Cup.
With an eye on environment protection, the IOC will also encourage potential host cities to use existing or temporary venues, while new permanent facilities will only be considered as a part of sustainable legacy plans. And finally, Evaluation Commissions will be replaced by a pair of "Future Host Commissions" to explore, create, and oversee interest in upcoming Olympic Games.
The IOC also affirmed that while its members will maintain their role "at the center" of the decision-making process, full sessions to select future hosts will remain a crucial element of the experience.
