Ever since the “24 Solar Terms” was listed as UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage, or maybe even earlier, its charm and value have been increasingly recognized by the public.
An institute sponsored by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and its subordinate organizations was established on Thursday, in order to further exploit the meteorological and cultural value of the 24 solar terms.
The “24 solar terms” is the Chinese traditional way of dividing and marking time, in accordance with the sun’s position in the zodiac. Its originality could be related to the agricultural demands of the ancient Chinese people.

The newly established China Weather Institute of 24 Solar Terms would make full use of the meteorological elements of the solar terms. By studying the differences in different regions, climate, culture, tradition and history, the achievements could expand the connotations of the tradition, as well as the applications in culture, agriculture and even commercialization.
According to the official announcement made at the launching ceremony, the institute will focus on the interdisciplinary research, and combine the scientific studies with commercial application. They will also make products for the public, by melting the scientific studies with cultural promotion.
The institute is also eyeing cooperation with colleges, research centers as well as Internet companies, to develop new forms of products, such as publishing books on 24 solar terms, holding forums and making cultural creative products.
