A large-scale, systematic restoration project has begun for the Dazu Rock Carvings.

In China, the Dazu Rock Carvings enjoys the same fame as the Dunhuang Grottoes. It is a World Heritage site, boasting 50,000 statues that are dated from the 9th century to the 13th century. But in recent decades, it has faced renovation challenges.

The repair work will focus on two sites. One is the reclining Buddha statue in Baoding Mountain. The statue, measuring 31 meters from head to toe, is the world's largest stone carving of Buddha in a reclining pose and also the largest artifact at the Dazu Rock Carvings.
