The Chinese women's football team arrived in Naples, Italy, on Saturday to compete in the upcoming 2019 World Summer University Games.
The Games will open on July 3 and the women's football tournament will kick off the next day, with China pitted alongside Mexico and Russia in the group stage.
The 20-member squad come from seven different universities across the country. Team coach Yu Dongfeng admitted that it is challenging to coordinate the team, but they have adjusted their positions to bring individuals’ advantages.
Meanwhile, team captain Wang Huan said, "We are fully prepared for the game during training in (northeast China’s) Dalian City. We are confident and hope to have a good and satisfying result."
Zhang Lei, vice president of Federation of University Sports of China, who is leading the delegation to Italy, talks about China’s goal in the 30th edition of the Summer Universiade.
“On one hand, we would like to showcase Chinese university students, on the other hand, we want to test our university sports level. We demand all athletes to have a clean and fair game to best represent themselves.”
The Summer Universiade, a biennial sports gala hosted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), was initiated six decades ago in Torino.
China is sending 198 student athletes, with an average age of 22, to compete in 144 events in 14 sports.
