"We urge the U.S. side to abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, not to allow the Taiwan leader to 'transit,' avoiding damaging China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a news briefing on Monday.

Geng made the remarks when commenting on Tsai Ing-wen's planned "transit" through the country en route to the Caribbean.

China urged the U.S. to properly handle Taiwan-related issues, he added, noting that the position is "consistent and firm."

China is always opposed to arranging such kind of "stopover" on the part of the U.S. and other countries that have established diplomatic ties with China, the spokesperson said.
