The Hong Kong SAR government strongly condemns and deeply regrets the extremely violent acts committed by some protesters who stormed the Legislative Council Complex this afternoon, using a roll cage trolley as a ram and iron poles to shatter the glass doors.

Hong Kong is a society that respects the rule of law and has never tolerated violence, said a statement released by the government, urging the protesters who resorted to violence to stop their acts immediately.

"These protesters seriously jeopardized the safety of police officers and members of the public. Such violent acts are unacceptable to society," the statement read.

Hong Kong police has also promised to safeguard the security of local residents.

Protestors should stop any kind of violent action immediately, said President of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen. "Suggestions should be delivered in a peaceful and rational way," he said.
