The small village of Kala in southwest China's Guizhou Province has won itself a name for making some of the most delicate wooden birdcages in China. /VCG photo

The local Miao minority artisans have been weaving the traditional handicraft for centuries. They use bamboos to construct the cages and apply a layer of tung oil to protect the wooden structures from insect bites. /VCG Photo

The village has a long tradition of capturing and raising birds. Almost every household in Kala makes a living weaving bird cages that sell in China and abroad. /VCG Photo

In 2008, the art of making Kala's handwoven birdcages was listed as Guizhou's intangible cultural heritage. VCG Photo
