Many of China's oldest residential communities are in for renewal and renovation. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has prioritized this in the latest government work report.

Last year, 106 pilot cites were renewed, which benefited nearly 60,000 people. The trial proved the feasibility of the project, which can improve people's basic living conditions with little cost.

The financial support will be raised from the government, society, and the residents themselves.

By the end of May, there were 170,000 old communities reported to require renovation, affecting hundreds of millions of residents.

The Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development says in the press conference local governments should take actions that suit local conditions and ensure the maintenance of the infrastructure.

Residential water service, fiber optics, heating, and public services, and the ongoing waste regulation are also part of the infrastructure that ought to be maintained.

For those cities with severe aging problems, equipping the buildings with elevators should also be considered.

As a nationwide project, it is not just a major livelihood plan to meet domestic demands, but also a stable investment for the years to come.
