The Hong Kong society has condemned violent actions after a mob stormed into the Legislative Council (LegCo) building on July 1, and called such acts a "breach of law and order" and "serious crime."
A group of people smashed the glass door at the entrance of the legislature with a metal cage trolley and iron poles on Monday evening, and they stormed in and defaced the seal of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with graffiti.
The Legislative Council building complex was sealed off by police on Tuesday. The President of the LegCo Andrew Leung inspected the damaged building. He said many things in the building were lost and they were still counting.
Leung also condemned violent actions. He told reporters, "I hereby call on everyone: Whatever your political opinion is, or your disagreement on any subject, it is not tolerable to turn to violence."
Other lawmakers also condemned the behavior and called on efforts to defend the rule of law in Hong Kong.
The chairman of Hong Kong Democratic Alliance for Betterment and Progress, Lee Wai-King, said they strongly condemned "the extremists and their horrible violence" in the LegCo building and such behavior is a "serious crime."
Lawmaker Kwok Wai-Keung said the rule of law is Hong Kong's core values and what happened on Monday evening did harm to these values. Without the rule of law, it would be difficult for Hong Kong to remain stable and prosperous, Kowk said.
Lam Shuk-Yee, the Honorary President of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, said people with a conscience who saw these violent actions on TV would oppose such behavior. It undermines Hong Kong's rule of law.
