More than one million residents in southern Japan have been ordered to evacuate to safer areas on Wednesday as mudslides are expected to occur due to continuing torrential rain, state broadcaster NHK reported.

The heavy rain is likely to continue in southwestern Japan's Kyushu region through Thursday, a local official said.
