In Hong Kong, the Qinghai Thangka Painting Exhibition is dedicated to celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 22nd anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. For Hong Kong residents, the exhibition opens a window to appreciate the unique charm of Qinghai.
Painted, embroidered, applique embroidered and inlaid... over 70 Regong thangka artworks are on display... all from Regong, in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Also known as "the Golden Valley", Regong is regarded as the "home of Tibetan painting" in China.
Visitors can also watch thangka masters paint on site and get to know more about how each piece is made. Thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist scroll painting on cotton or silk, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. It requires artists to treat every detail on a thangka painting carefully. By experiencing the painting, visitors can have an in-depth understanding of the thangka painting skills and the spirit delivered by the thangka artists.

A craft master in Qinghai said: "Some Hong Kong residents have never seen thangka before. So we explain to them the process of painting thangka. They are pretty surprised when they hear it takes artists months or even years to paint one thangka piece. Most of all, it requires peace of mind to complete the artwork. "
Along with thangka paintings, pictures about Qinghai as well as ethnic arts and crafts are on display. Organizers said the exhibition also aims to promote cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Qinghai Province.
