On hilly or mountainous terrains, farmers came up with a genius idea to grow crops thousands of years ago. They built terraced fields, allowing the slopes to conserve water for crops that need irrigation. In China, terraces are mostly seen in the southern hilly regions with abundant rainfall. The contours of terraces create stunning sinuous patterns.
