During the G20 Summit in Osaka, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on restarting economic and trade consultations. CGTN spoke to some international political figures who hope negotiating teams from both sides will translate it into reality in the future.

Timofei Bordachev, scientific director of the Center for European and International Studies, said that "Trump is never about the end. He is always about the process. But there is also good news. The good news is that Trump will not start any war. He is a businessman and he doesn't want to spend money. And he knows that those Americans, who voted for him, don't like spend money – that's why he will not start any war, he will not attack Iran for example.”

Aizaz Choudhry, former foreign secretary of Pakistan, said that, ”From the Osaka meeting, we heard that China and the U.S. will resume their [trade] talks. I think it's a good development because protectionism is not the answer to today's world which is an interconnected world. From many decades the world has been told that free international trade is good for everyone. And now if the United States goes for protectionism, that means we are negating all we were saying in the past five decades.”

Tran Dac Loi, former senior official of the Communist Party of Vietnam, also said that, “The result of future negotiations depends largely on the U.S. side. [If they] put unacceptable conditions that obstruct the Chinese development, [it] will be difficult for China to accept those conditions. And negotiations may face another kind of deadlock. ”

It has been widely recognized that a more stable China-U.S. relationship is good not only for China and the U.S., but also for the rest of the world.
