China's Song Shoulin claimed the first title of the 2019 Universiade, winning the women's 1m springboard diving event on Thursday.

The 20-year-old from Beijing Sports University collected a total of 258.35 points after five dives. Her compatriot Wu Chunting, from south China's Guangzhou Sports Institute, took silver with 256.30 points.

After Song Shoulin claimed the first gold medal for China on the first day of action at the Summer Universiade in Naples, the Chinese diving team earned two more gold medals in the men's competition.

In the men's one meter springboard, China's Liu Chengming jumped from second to first after his second dive, a reverse tuck with two and a half somersaults.

His countryman Li Ping'an tried to keep pace with a back tuck with two and a half somersaults. But the botched attempt seriously knocked Li out of contention as he slid down the standings.

With one of his toughest challengers basically eliminated, Liu finished strongly with a reverse pike effort that pushed his total to 399.00 points to claim gold, while Li finished sixth.

Shortly afterwards, Liu returned to seek a second title in the men's three meter springboard, and broke out a forward tuck with four and a half somersaults.

Liu scored 83.60 points with his final attempt to surge to 421.20 overall and claimed his second gold of the day. South Korea's Yi Jae-gyeong settled for silver while Russia's Ilia Molchanov won bronze.
