The places chosen for the program are locations familiar to local residents, such as rugby, golf or bowling clubs, war memorials and race courses. /VCG Photo

The New Zealand government has earmarked a total of 208 million New Zealand dollars (138.5 million U.S. dollars) for the gun buyback program, to compensate owners of banned semi-automatic weapons for 95 percent of the original price. The gun buybacks will last for about six months, with a deadline of December 20. /VCG Photo
