Stephon Marbury, one of the most popular foreign players ever in the CBA and the new head coach of the Beijing Royal Fighters, recently shared some insight into his approach during interviews with Beijing TV and Xinhua News Agency.

Marbury joined the Chinese basketball league in 2010 and from 2011 to 2017 brought the Beijing Ducks to a peak by helping them win three CBA championships in four years. However, the beautiful story failed to lead to a perfect ending as Marbury and the Ducks disagreed over whether he would play one more season after 2017. In the end, the former two-time NBA All-Star guard departed for the Beijing Fly Dragons, today's Royal Fighters.

Having reached the age of 42 and become a head coach, Marbury told BTV that he had already let go of what happened between him and the Ducks. He understands how the basketball business operation works and the memories he has now about former teammates and coaches are filled with nothing but love.

The Royal Fighters have been one of the worst teams in the CBA. Marbury, though new to the coaching job, is confident that he will build the team into something different. On the one hand, the team were busy on the transfer market to improve their franchise; on the other hand, Marbury believes that he can show the organization what a champion should look like. He also told Xinhua that instead of setting specific goals, he would like to have everything in the process – including training and preparations – right which should make the result good.

Marbury used to express interest in coaching the Chinese national team but he told BTV that he's not the man for the job right now. He believes that Team China should have a Chinese coach, though he is willing to offer any help as an assistant coach. When asked about the coming FIBA Basketball World Cup, Marbury said China will make it out of Group A where they are grouped with Poland, Côte d'Ivoire and Venezuela.
