China's Zhang Shuai reached the quarterfinals at The Championships, Wimbledon 2019 on Monday after beating Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

This is the second time for Zhang to reach the last eight of a Grand Slam championship after the 2016 Australian Open, and become the first Chinese player to compete for a spot in the semifinals at Wimbledon since Li Na in 2013.

Zhang advanced into the last 16 after beating former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark on July 5.

"A Grand Slam means a lot to me and I want to keep my career going much longer," said Zhang.

She had been stopped five times in the first round at All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club since 2011 and was also stopped in the 2nd round of the French Open in May.

Her opponent, Dayana Yastremska, also reached the last 16 for the first time at Wimbledon. Last year, Zhang was defeated by Yastremska in the semifinals of WTA Hong Kong Open 7-5, 6-4.

She will face either 15-year-old Coco Gauff or former world No. 1 Simona Halep for a place in the semifinals.
