The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said Tuesday it had demanded, through a solemn representation to the U.S. general consulate in HKSAR, that the U.S. immediately stop ill-fated speech and actions and not to go further down the wrong road path.
A spokesperson said the commissioner's office was "gravely concerned about" the meetings of the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Hong Kong businessman Jimmy Lai.
"We expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the interactions between the U.S. and Jimmy Lai. This is a seriously wrong signal," the spokesperson pointed out, urging relevant countries to respect international law and basic norms governing international relations.
The spokesperson condemned Jimmy Lai's behavior as "disregarding national dignity and serving as a political tool for foreign forces to fight against China."
"To all Chinese people, such kind of ugly and dishonorable acts are shameful," the spokesperson added.
Also on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang reiterated China's position on Hong Kong affairs, urging the U.S. to immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
