A tomb with brick carvings and frescoes from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) has been found in Ji'nan, Shandong Province.
According to a Xinhua news agency report, this is a relatively well-preserved tomb with high specifications.
The underground structure of the tomb is circular, its dome has a lotus relief, with auspicious clouds on the wall, where the words "Zhiyuan Year 22nd" are engraved. The overall shape resembles a yurt, with a tomb passage door facing south.
"At present, there are not many tombs from the Yuan Dynasty that have been well preserved and can be accurately documented, which makes this one very precious," said Guo Junfeng, Director of the archaeological section, Ji'nan Institute of Archaeology. The tomb has been registered and will be protected.
Since no immediate engineering or other external factors threaten the tomb's preservation, experts decided not to carry out an archaeological rescue excavation.
This is not the first time that a Yuan Dynasty tomb was found in Ji'nan.
