The Shaanxi History Museum showcases a tri-colored glazed pottery camel from the Tang Dynasty, which is said to perfectly reflect the rich imagination and superb art of the people living in the era during that time.
The national treasure-level cultural relic dates back to more than one thousand years ago and is attracting everyone's attention.
The Tang Dynasty was the most glorious time in ancient China. Its capital Chang'an was the largest and the most prosperous metropolis in the world at the time. The cultural relics from the dynasty are the reflection of the inclusiveness of the era and the achievements attained through creativity.
Guo Weilu from Shaanxi History Museum says: "How can a camel carry eight people on its back? But when we see this artwork, we feel that it is so harmonious, without any feeling of crowding or exaggeration. This is the perfect combination of art exaggeration combined with real-life by craftsmen in the Tang Dynasty. It also reflects its rich imagination."
Although the cultural relic was made a long time ago, its colors can still be clearly seen.
In ancient China, animals did a lot of heavy economic lifting and made a significant contribution to art. This artwork also reflects prosperity along the Silk Road.
Guo said: "The camel is called 'the boat of the desert,' the best companion of people on the journey, so in the Tang Dynasty, a large number of camel-themed artworks appeared. Along the Silk Road, the business journey is very lonely and arduous, but people still maintain a positive, optimistic attitude and this is what the artist wants to convey to us."
With unique shapes, tri-colored glazed pottery covered almost every field of life, displaying the social life and the splendid culture of the Tang Dynasty. The production technique of tri-colored glazed pottery is very complex and was listed as China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008.
