Antetokounmpo named Best Male Athlete, Best NBA Player at ESPYS 2019

The 2019 ESPY Awards, considered by many as the "Oscars of the sports world," were handed to their winners on Wednesday at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, California, U.S. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks received the Best Male Athlete and the Best NBA Player Awards.

Before Wednesday, 24-year-old Antetokounmpo was already the 2019 NBA MVP by the league. Receiving the Best Male Athlete award at his age, the Greek Freak surpassed LeBron James, who had it in 2012 at 27 to become the youngest NBA player to get the honor.

Other NBA figures who held the trophy at the stage this time included Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans and one of the greatest names in NBA history, Bill Russell. Williamson was named Best College Athlete for his incredible performance at Duke University. Russell received the trophy for Arthur Ashe Award for Courage from Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Team USA was also a big winner at the ceremony. The organization was voted Best Team after winning the championship at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The team's forward Alex Morgan became Best Female Athlete after scoring six goals to bring her country to the throne.

Best International Men's Soccer Player went to Argentine forward Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Best International Women's Soccer Player was received by Australian forward Sam Kerr of the Chicago Red Stars. The best players of the other three major sports leagues in North America were: Patrick Mahomes (NFL), Christian Yelich (MLB) and Alexander Ovechkin (NHL).

The NHL's St. Louis Blues won the Best Comeback Award for bringing home the 2019 Stanley Cup.
