Today marks World Population Day. The United Nations (UN) set up the event in 1989, to raise awareness of global population issues. But today, population growth in India remains a big concern for the country.

According to a UN report released last month, India is set to overtake China as the world's most populous country by 2027, with the gap expected to continue to increase until at least 2050.

Around 17 percent of the world's total population lives in India, with a density of over 450 per square kilometer. India is the world's seventh largest country by land area. From 2010 to 2019, India's population grew at an annual rate of just above one percent.

The country's median age is estimated to be around 28 years, and almost 70 percent of the population is in the 15 to 64 age group.
