In China, whenever The Three Kingdoms is mentioned, a number of things immediately come to mind, such as the turbulent period in Chinese history that produced the heroes immortalized in one of Four Great Chinese Classic Novels "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," which is the inspiration of countless films, comics and board games.

Indeed, such is the timeless cultural reach of The Three Kingdoms that it's also the theme of online games popular with players all over the world.

In their third collaboration, young documentary maker Dun Jinchuan and veteran filmmaker Jiang Yue go on a journey into the world created as a result of the three kingdoms period.

It's a fascinating exploration of the spiritual wealth and rich cultural legacy generated by the tales of loyalty and cunning that have gripped the Chinese national imagination for almost 2,000 years.

More than just a retelling of the familiar tale of how three states contended for supremacy in those far-off days, "The World of Three Kingdoms" is the story of the three kingdoms that both reveals the historical truth behind the legends and traces the metamorphosis of historical personalities of familiar cultural icons and household names, a process that continues to this day.

This documentary also ventures into less well-known territory: The international influence of Three Kingdoms culture. As Professor Watanabe Yoshihiro from Waseda University points out in the series, there are currently six translated versions of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" in circulation in Japan alone, and some one million copies of works inspired by the classic in circulation. Japan's Nishogakusha University even offers a course in "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" studies.
