Two artists from China and Russia were the opening acts of a week of music in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao that has been put together by renowned composer and conductor Tan Dun.

Russian guitarist Artyom Dervoed and Chinese suona horn player Liu Wenwen gave stunning performances to usher in the first Tan Dun·Qingdao Music Week on Wednesday.

"I know classical guitar music is very popular in China and I am looking forward to playing with Tan Dun," Dervoed said. "That will be a great honor for me. We will play a great piece by him and I think we will all be amazed."

"I think it will be impressive when traditional Chinese suona music meets with Russian classical guitar music. I hope the audience will have a different visual and acoustic experience after watching our show," said Liu.

Tan Dun, an Oscar and Grammy winner, said the inaugural event was just a small step towards making it a fully-grown music festival in Qingdao in Shandong Province.

"Starting from the event, we will make continuous efforts to produce high-level music weeks in Qingdao. This year we only have four activities in the event, but next year we will introduce more than 30. We hope to make the music week a festival that is celebrated across the city," he said.

The festival includes forums covering art, design and film making.
