China's Chen Yiwen won the gold medal in the women's 1-meter springboard diving on Saturday at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Chen scored a total of 285.45 points while her teammate Chang Yani finished sixth with 251.95 points.

This is the second gold for the Chinese diving team in the championships. The women's 1m springboard is not an Olympic Games event.

Sarah Bacon of the U.S. won the silver medal with 262.00 points and Kim Su-ji took bronze with 257.20 points, which was the first medal won by a South Korean diver in the event at the World Championships.

It took Chen two world championships in four years to claim the title. Though her teammate Chang did not finish her moves well in the second and third jumps, Chen was not distracted. "I just focused on my next move without thinking about anything else," she said in a post-competition interview with CCTV, "This (gold) is just a start."

Chen and Chang participated at the previous world championships in Budapest, Hungary in 2017 but failed to do well under pressure. Chang failed to make the final and Chen ranked fourth in the final.

Chen led in all five rounds this time, but got a subpar 48 points due to splash at entry at her fourth jump.
