2019 Summer Universiade ends in Naples, Chengdu will host in 2021

In Naples, the 2019 Summer Universiade finished in spectacular style with its closing ceremony officially bringing an end to the 12-day celebration of university athletics. China's delegation will leave the Italian city fairly happy, after earning 22 gold medals, and 43 in total to sit third in the table.

More than 35,000 spectators are in attendance for the closing show at a sold-out San Paolo Stadium. Japan finished on top of the final medal table with 33 golds and 82 in total. They are followed by Russia who had 22 first-placed podium finishes, and 82 overall. 

"Celebrating our 70th anniversary, we wanted to make Napoli 2019 truly unique,” added FISU President Oleg Matytsin. “The passion and enthusiasm from the city of Naples has made sure that we have achieved our goal. I want to thank everyone, from the athletes and volunteers to the organizers and public authorities for creating such a special Universiade.”

Finally Matytsin passes the Universiade flag to Luo Qiang, mayor of Chengdu, the host city of the next Summer Universiade in 2021. The closing concluded with an incredible party that will live long in the memory of the athletes and fans in attendance. Student athletes will take center stage of January 2021 at the winter Universiade in Lucerne.
