China hails the "Golden Era" in China-UK relations, hoping that the two parties would commit to the important consensus reached by their respective leaders and bring the bilateral relations back on track, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang at a press conference Thursday.

Lu also noted that developing China-UK relations serves the interests of the two peoples, hoping that the UK would take concrete actions to safeguard the bilateral ties.

His remarks come after British Prime Minister Theresa May reiterated Wednesday that the UK hopes to maintain good relations with China as it pays attention to Hong Kong affairs.

Regarding her comments, Lu stressed that Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs since Hong Kong's return to the motherland in 1997, adding that Hong Kong's governance is based on China's Constitution and the Basic Law.

China opposes to any foreign intervention, said Lu, urging the UK and other countries and organizations, including the European Parliament, which is planning to impose sanctions over Hong Kong affairs, not to interfere.
