Chinese men's singles player Huang Yuxiang defeated defending Indonesia Open badminton champion Kento Momota from Japan on Thursday, qualifying for quarterfinal berth in this year's tournament in Jakarta.

Despite losing the second game, Huang closed out the match against world no. 1 Momota with scores of 21-16, 11-21 and 21-18 in one hour and 14 minutes.

Speaking after the match, Momota said that he had not played productively during the match.

"But I will avenge (my defeat) should we meet again at the Tokyo Olympics," the Japanese vowed.

Huang's victory was not matched by his top-seeded compatriot Shi Yuqi, who retired hurt in his second round match against Danish contender Anders Antonsen.

In the men's singles event, other Chinese players who did not have the best of days included Lin Dan and Chen Long.

Lin was defeated by Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien-chen, and Chen Long lost a narrow match against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia by scores of 21-16, 19-21, 22-20.

Meanwhile, in women's singles, Chen Yufei defeated Japanese player Sayaka Takahashi in three games 15-21, 21-17 and 21-12 to secure the quarterfinal berth.

Chen became the only Chinese quarterfinalist and will vie against Zhang Beiwen from the U.S. after the latter defeated Chinese player He Bingjiao 21-15, 15-21 and 21-18.

In men's doubles, Chinese pair He Jiting/Tan Qiang sealed their quarterfinal berth after edging out their compatriots Han Chengkai/Zhou Haodong 21-17 and 21-18 on Thursday.

In women's doubles, 2017 Indonesia Open champions Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan of China trashed Indonesia's only hope Della Destiara Haris/Rizki Amelia Pradipta to book a quarterfinal against their Chinese fellow pair Du Yue/Li Yinhui.
