Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southwestern China's Sichuan Province is as visually stunning as it is historically significant. The pristine lakes and mountains are so remarkable that you're sure to regret it if you neglect to bring your camera. Centuries ago, this place was also traversed by traders on the ancient Southern Silk Road. I can't help but wonder what merchants as far back as 2,000 years ago thought of the scenery as they passed through on their way to Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East.

One of your first stops in Liangshan might be Huili County. Centuries ago, it was a notable military garrison and a center for trade. The old town attracted many rich and influential families, and the area is still home to sprawling compounds where these residents once lived. Today, Huili is known as China's largest producer of pomegranates, and it's also the hometown of green glazed pottery.

Lizhou Ancient Town is the oldest part of Xichang City, which is the prefectural capital of Liangshan. In the old days, Lizhou was once the northern gateway to Xichang and thus a significant point on the Southern Silk Road. If you explore the area, you'll find many remnants of Lizhou's glorious past, including old courtyard homes that have been converted into shops, which are run by descendants of the original occupants.

Liangshan also has some pretty incredible nature. The geological wonders that make up Huanglian Earth Forest may look like rock formations at first glance, but they're actually compacted soil, formed 80 to 100 million years ago. In recent years, Qionghai Lake has been the focus of sustainability projects with extraordinary results. The second largest lake in Sichuan Province, Qionghai Lake is now a popular eco-tourism destination. There's a walkway that runs around the entire circumference of the lake, totaling 44 kilometers, and it's perfect for strolling, jogging, and biking. The greenery is as cleansing for the soul as it is for the lungs.

Lugu Lake is an alpine lake shared by Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. It’s considered the home of the Mosuo people, often described as one of the last matriarchal tribes in the world.
