Having finished its nine-day trip at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, the Chinese national diving team won gold medals in all of the 12 events its athletes attended, showing China's dominance in diving and gaining more confidence for the competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Eight years ago, at the World Championships in Changsha of central China's Hunan Province, China collected golds. Though this time it's still hopeful for the team to reproduce that success, team leader Zhou Jihong decided not to send Yang Hao to participate in the mixed 3-meter synchronized springboard.

"This is his (Yang Hao's) first time to attend men's 10-meter platform diving and he needs to refine himself in more competitions like that. That's why we decided to quit mixed 3-meter synchronized springboard so he can save more strength for 10-meter platform," said Zhou.

China sent a mixed-aged team to Gwangju and to help young athletes adapt themselves to tougher competitions. Five youngsters made breakthroughs to become the new world champions in their events.

Thirteen-year-old Chen Yuxi got her first world major gold medal in women's 10-meter platform while Lu Wei who was at the same age won gold by working with Zhang Jiaqi in women's 10-meter synchronized platform.

The other three new champions attended non-Olympics events: Wang Zongyuan took men's 1-meter springboard gold in his first trip at the World Championships; Chen Yiwen in women's 1-meter springboard won the title she lost last time in Budapest; Lin Shan worked with Yang Jian to top the mixed team event.

Though China won all golds in the eight Olympic events its athletes participated, the country must be careful in some of the events for Tokyo.

Shi Tingmao and Wang Han can be the biggest championship insurance for China in women's springboard. Shi won the 3-meter singles gold and paired with Wang to get the 3-meter synchronized title.

In women's 10-meter platform, China has enough options, but the team has to watch out for athletes' physical development and weight growth which play important roles in deciding the result of the competition.

Chinese divers face more intense contests in men's events. Xie Siyi and Cao Yuan are the country's best athletes in springboard but Xie still needs to work on his degree of difficulty while Cao must improve his steadiness. In men's 3-meter springboard final, the two made a shocking comeback due to the horrible error of Britain's Jack Laugher in his last round. Luck is rarely on anyone's side for long.

Chinese athletes are not carefree in men's platform either. Cao attended three events – men's 3-meter springboard, men's 3-meter synchronized springboard and men's 10-meter synchronized platform – which cannot happen at the Summer Olympics. China needs to find its best platform pair without putting too much load on the athletes.

Though Yang Jian brought back men's 10-meter platform title for his country, Tom Daley of Britain is and will still be the arch rival of China in this event. Yang Jian, Yang Hao and Chen Aisen must watch out for him in Tokyo.
