At least 17 people were killed and 28 others wounded when a car bomb was detonated outside a hotel in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Monday, according to local medical officials.
The explosion happened near a checkpoint outside the Afrik Hotel, reverberated throughout the city and sent a massive plume of black smoke into the air.
Islamist militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.
