Marvel made a special announcement during Sunday's Comic-Con in San Diego, during which the movie studio introduced several upcoming super hero films. In addition to the eagerly awaited Doctor Strange II and Black Widow, audiences were pleasantly surprised to see the return of Thor.

Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok, has signed on to direct and write a fourth installment of the series, according to the CNBC, with Thor icon Chris Hemsworth confirmed to return to the project.

Most exciting of all is the return of actress Natalie Portman, who played Jane Foster in the Thor series. Marvel Studios revealed that Jane foster would replace Thor as "female Thor." Natalie Portman held up Thor's hammer during the SDCC announcement.

A possible replacement for Thor has been hinted in comic books, BuzzFeed News reported, where Thor loses his power to wield the hammer before his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster takes his place as the Goddess of Thunder.

Few details have been revealed about the where Thor: Love and Thunder will take the story, nevertheless Portman said she was thrilled to take on the new role in an Instagram post where she joked "remember this as the before picture for when I get jacked," alluding to the physical transformation of her character.

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
